“Spend money, have fun”? That’s weird.

A few years ago, my family and I were browsing the lot at an RV dealership and a friendly salesman rode up to us on a golf cart. At the end of our short conversation, he gave us his assessment of RV ownership condensed into one simple phrase: “you’ll save money and have fun.” We ended up buying a used RV on craigslist and he ended up being half a liar. We’ve had a lifetime’s worth of fun in that RV, but I never felt like we saved any money between fuel costs, campground fees, and never-ending maintenance. Even still, we have absolutely no regrets. The salesman’s phrase stuck in our minds and we lightheartedly morphed it into a more realistic tagline: “spend money, have fun.” It’s often the same for vacations, but it doesn’t mean you have to pay more than necessary or shouldn’t seek out the maximum value for your dollar.
